The power came back on up here at the cabin a couple of days ago, and I figured it would be a good thing to come out for a couple of days and check for damage, sample my Black Butte Porter clone, and re-connect with the snowmobiles.
The good news is that the roads are in good shape, and the main cabin and brewhaus survived unscathed. The bad news is this:
I didn’t notice this at first because the damaged roof is on the backside of the garage. When I opened the garage door to say hello to the snowmobiles, my first thought was, ‘Why is there daylight in the garage?’ My second thought was, ‘Oh shit!’
One third of one side of the roof collapsed when a tree broke 2/3 of the way up the tree.
So this wasn’t a case of a tree getting loaded up with snow and slowly leaning over until it came to rest against something. It leaned over till it snapped and then came crashing down. I don’t think that any roof could have survived the impact.
I haven’t looked under the tarps yet to see what damage was done. There are a lot of paper files and clothes, but there are also dishes and some furniture. I’ll take a look under the tarps tomorrow when Alex will be here to help me move trees and stuff.
Well that sucks – good luck on the clean up and repair – hope no damage was done under the tarps
Oh Scheisse – as we say in Austria. Not good indeed. What a dramatic end to this year – it can only get better going forward!
insurance repair?
